The Galapagos Special is a special aired after Endurance 3: Hawaii.

Overview[]

The "Endurance: Hawaii" champions travel to the Galapagos Islands, where they swim with tropical penguins, play with sea lions and meet a tortoise named Lonesome George.

Summary[]

The episode opens with a clip from the casting special, followed by a montage of the season ending with Gray winning at the final Temple of Fate. With Endurance: Hawaii having finished broadcasting on both NBC and Discovery Kids, Chris and Lindi embark on flight to take their vacation on the Galapagos Islands; during their vacation, they'd be staying on a ship sponsored by Lindblad Expeditions and travel from island to island. First off, Chris and Lindi check out the native animals on the trail, including seals and iguanas, and even have a conversation with a burping sea lion by the name of the Beach Master!

Further along the trail, they learn the blue-footed booby dance, which is actually a mating ritual that involves whistles from males and groans from females. Now having explored Espanola Island, Chris and Lindi move onto Floriana Island, where they learn about the first post office to ever be established in the Pacific Ocean, which was used by sailors to transport mail throughout their routes. The next day, they go to the Charles Darwin Research Station to meet Lonesome George, who was the tallest tortoise on record, and also the last of his subspecies on Pinta Island. In addition, they get to feed the tortoises, and praise the scientists, naturalists and environmentalists at the Research Station for their efforts in keeping the tortoises safe.

While Endurance: Hawaii was rife with extremely wet conditions, Chris and Lindi have switched hemispheres and climates for their grand prize trip. During their motorboat travels, they explore the numerous species of fish and dolphins in pods, who occasionally pop out from the waves to greet them. Later that day, they snorkel to meet them up close and personal, and see even more undersea wildlife! Even though sharks are one predator to worry about in the Galapagos Islands, sea lions are too, although they only target fish and generally just try to be playful when underwater.

Towards the end of the week, Chris and Lindi greet some penguins native to the Galapagos Islands, as a result of the Cromwell and Humboldt Currents mixing with one another to balance out the equator's humid conditions so they can thrive. The next animal species they meet are the flightless cormorant, who swim instead and coexist with marine iguanas; they blow out salt through their noses when they reach their ideal intake. The last island they explore is Genovesa, which J.D. calls Bird Island, although the sea lions come back one last time to help them communicate. The episode ends with Chris and Lindi reflecting not only about what they experienced not only on the Galapagos Islands, but on the show itself.

Trivia[]

  • Only time a whole episode is dedicated to seeing a winning team's trip
  • First time since the Endurance 1 Reunion where footage of the endurance champions' prize trip is shown. It would also be the last.
  • Last special that doesn't center around recapping previous episodes or having a countdown of some kind (favorite missions, best twists).
